Scammers are using artificial intelligence and voice cloning technology to impersonate police officers in Snohomish County. The Everett Police recently issued a warning for people to be on the lookout for phone scams using artificial intelligence voice-cloning technology. One such case was reported in the Snohomish County area recently, prompting the warning. A scammer using AI voice-cloning technology was able to impersonate a police officer in a phone call. The scammer sent text messages and emails to potential victims, persuading them to purchase gift cards and provide bank account information. The Everett Police have warned people to be wary of phone calls, emails, and text messages that are unsolicited or appear to be from a legitimate source. In order to protect themselves, potential victims should not provide any information, or send any money to someone they do not know and trust. The police are also advising that if someone suspects they are being targeted by a voice clone scam, they should call their local police department. |
