Voice cloning is a deceptive digital manipulation technique that takes an individual's voice – usually taken from a recording — and creates a perfect copycat version. It is then used to impersonate the person whose voice was copied. The Bronx News 12 team wants to make sure that you’re aware of this new type of crime and have provided tips to help you recognize and avoid voice clone fraud. First, when receiving a call from an unfamiliar number, be suspicious and do not answer the call if you don't recognize it. You should also be aware of any calls that seem too good to be true. If someone claims they are from the IRS or a bank, then take a step back and ask the caller to give you time to verify their identity. Second, if you do happen to pick up the call, be wary of any requests for personal or financial information. Legitimate businesses will never ask for your banking information or social security number. If you are asked for these details, it is most likely a scam. Finally, if you are suspicious of a call, hang up immediately and reach out to the organization that the caller claims to be calling from to verify the conversation.
