Voice Clone Scam: Mom Warns of Artificial Intelligence Fraudulent Scheme A recent voice clone scam shows how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used for malicious purposes. A mother from Virginia recently reported that a group attempted to use a cloned voice of her daughter to scam her out of money. The mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her story with ABC News. She explained that she received a call from someone claiming to have her daughter in their custody and they demanded money to secure her release. Utterly terrified, the mother was suspicious and asked the callers to prove they had her daughter. To her dismay, they sent her audio of her daughter’s voice, which had been cloned using artificial intelligence. This alarming incident highlights the very real security threat presented by AI-generated voice cloning. There are now technologies available that allow people to create realistic-sounding audio of somebody else’s voice. This technology can be used for nefarious purposes such as extortion and fraud. Luckily, in this case, the mother was suspicious and the scammers failed to get any money from her. She urges others to remain vigilant and not to believe any voice over the phone unless they are 100% confident it belongs to the person they think it does. This is a good reminder that we must remain vigilant against emerging threats as technology advances. |
